oh, sing sing sing for the dying of the day
today was a holiday in india. republic day! i went to nakki lake, honeymoon point and sunset point. i have been thinking about yash chopra's lamhe while i've been mount abu. at sunset point there were at least a hundred people gathered together on high rocks watching the sun set.

primary colors in mount abu
first day out in mount abu and its environs. the color here is intense. we tripped around broken glass on the side of the lake where people go to drink at night and smash the bottles when they're finished. during the day, families come here and watch the water. the rocks here remind me of the rocks that would come from an imagined prehistoric landscape, huge, seemingly as light as styrofoam, randomly strewn through the landscape that is made up of mountains, palm trees, bright blue skies, sharp, clear january sun.

some updates from the desert detour
we detoured through the desert because friends from nashville were in town. we went to jodhpur, jaipur and jaisalmer. the blue city, pink city and gold city. the desert! camels! warm sun!
i'm fighting off a cold now so i won't write much. tomorrow we return to the mountains and i'm back to work. we're going to mount abu: the switzerland of rajasthan.

the movies
i've been thinking a lot about the movies lately. i've been told the theaters here are massive, that people dance down the aisles during the songs, they can seat 1000 people at a time and are usually sold out. we went to see our first bollywood movie in the theater the other day. it was in fact wonderful. bollywood film's relationship with the landscape is something i am looking at while i'm here but the theater itself is another beautiful thing altogether. where it begins i guess.

love love love (some updates from the last week)
i am in the middle of a brief two week hiatus from taking pictures in the mountains as it is too cold and the roads aren't so passable and i have friends in town (!) so we are doing all the fun non mountain related things in a whirlwind two week extravaganza. like going to varanasi, seeing the ganges during sunrise and sunset, going to agra, seeing the taj mahal! going to jaipur and jodhpur. seeing camels all of a sudden everywhere. freezing cold, constant fog, toes frozen. new scenery, different weather, everything. the taj mahal was beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. the things that have been done for love. incredible.

new year eve and new years day
New Year's Eve in Delhi felt like I was in Blade Runner... and then a short flight to Varanasi on New Year's day and here we are. Tomorrow we are getting up to watch the sun rise over the river.
A small notice: The next two weeks are a brief hiatus from the mountains... so less switzerland, more india? Less landscapes, more cities at the very least. We'll see. We have friends in town and the mountains are too cold and/or inaccessible the first two weeks January so the next few posts might be somewhat of a diversion from my work on my project here, but nevertheless I'll share what's going on. Starting with New Years Eve in Delhi... well be in Varanasi, Agra, Jodphur and Jaipur. Then back to work starting mid-jan in Mount Abu or The Switzerland of Rajasthan.
